Location: Many – this position requires travel but not relocation.

The American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA) is currently seeking experienced forensic DNA Analysts to act as contracted assessors for the A2LA forensic accreditation program. Forensic DNA analysts with 10 or more years experience, familiarity with CODIS, and performing internal/external audits a plus. Those selected as contracted assessors will be provided with training in the international standard ISO/IEC 17025 and relevant A2LA policies and requirements. Compensation for contracted assessors includes a daily rate plus travel expenses. Travel is estimated at 2 to 4 days for each assessment, the number of trips being at the assessor’s discretion.

Forensic Scientist Biology/DNA Section – Operational
– Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Genetics, Forensic Science or Molecular Biology.  Four (4) years experience working in a forensics laboratory performing scientific analysis of forensic evidence, plus one (1) year independent case work analysis.

Duties
Forensic Scientists specialize in areas such as DNA analysis or firearm examination, performing tests on weapons or on substances such as hair, tissue, and body fluids to determine their significance to the investigation. Forensic Scientists also prepare reports to document their findings, quality controls and the laboratory techniques used, and provide information and expert opinions to investigators. When criminal cases come to trial, Forensic Scientists give testimony as expert witnesses on laboratory findings regarding identifying individuals, weapons or substances from evidence collected at the scene of a crime.  Forensic Scientists often work closely with other experts.

Latent Print Section: performs all work related to the chemical processing and photographing of latent prints and the comparison of latent prints recovered from crime scenes and evidence submitted to the Forensic Laboratory Bureau.  Knowledge and experience of principles, methods, and current techniques used in friction ridge analysis is highly desirable.

Firearms/Toolmark Examination:  performs work involved in the examination and testing of firearms, the comparison of fired cartridge components, muzzle to target estimations, serial number restoration, and toolmark examinations.  Having documented competency in at least one or more of the above examinations is highly desirable.

Forensic Biology/DNA: performs work involved in the examination of forensic evidence for the presence of biological materials including blood, semen, saliva, and cellular material. DNA analysis involves the extraction, quantification, analysis, and interpretation of forensic DNA samples isolated from the materials listed above. Knowledge and experience of principles, methods, materials, equipment, and current techniques used in forensic biology screening and DNA is highly desirable.

Criminalistics Manager

The NYPD is seeking a Criminalistics Manager to oversee the Latent Print Development Unit, the Intoxicated Driver Testing and Blood Alcohol Units, and the Questioned Documents Unit in the Criminalistics Section of the Police Laboratory. The Manager ensures the update and maintenance of NYPD Laboratory Standard Operating Protocols (SOPs) as mandated by the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/Laboratory Accreditation Board (ASCLD/LAB) and the New York State Commission of Forensic Science (NYSCOFS); oversees the activities of a scientific staff engaged in performing analyses of evidentiary material and specimens, and coordinates the training curriculum, proficiency testing and evaluation of assigned personnel.  This position coordinates the preparation of research and statistical reports; evaluates instrument calibration and maintenance records; resolves any technical problems; confirms that all analytical reports are acceptable in a court of law and conform to ASCLD/LAB and ISO 17025 mandates; prepares and monitors budget requests and resource usage, and may be called upon to testify in court as an expert witness regarding laboratory findings.
 
Qualification Requirements
A BA/BS degree in criminalistics, forensic science, chemistry, biology, physics, biochemistry, molecular biology, or a closely related scientific or engineering field, plus 5 yrs of full-time prof exp in criminalistics, forensic science, or analytical chemistry, 18 mos of which must have been in a mgrl, supv, or admin capacity performing significant mgrl or supv duties in a forensic lab with a substantial case load and a staff of proficiency tested examiners/analysts.  All applicants will be subject to fingerprinting and background investigation.
